This painting is a view from our patio looking through a portion of the pergola. Working in our garden areas is one of my favorite activities when spring and summer arrive. The results of my labor are well worth it giving us countless hours and days of visual pleasure. With the Black-eyed Susans and the shadow areas, I decided for the first time to try painting on a black canvas. It was an experiment of working with positive and negative space and making the negative black space work to my advantage. I am pleased with the outcome, but I will let the viewer decide if my experiment was a success.
